WHY 432 Hz?

 

In much of the modern world, music is commonly tuned to A = 440 Hz. This means the note A above middle C vibrates at 440 cycles per second and has become the standard tuning reference for many instruments, recordings and orchestras.

Tenille Bentley works with music tuned to 432 Hz as part of her sound therapy practice and the En Coda Music project. The difference between 440 Hz and 432 Hz is subtle, but for many listeners it can feel softer, warmer and more spacious in the body. Rather than overstimulating the nervous system, 432 Hz is often explored as a way to support relaxation, meditative states and deeper listening.

Frequency simply refers to vibration. It is the number of times a sound wave moves, or oscillates, per second. When those waves reach the ear, the body receives them not only as sound, but also as sensation. This is why music can feel calming, moving, activating or deeply grounding.

The interest in 432 Hz sits within a broader field of research exploring how sound, music and vibration may affect the nervous system, heart rate, breath, stress response and emotional wellbeing. Studies into music therapy and sound-based interventions have shown that music can support stress reduction, relaxation and mood regulation. Some research also suggests that music tuned to 432 Hz may create measurable physiological changes when compared with 440 Hz.

A double-blind crossover pilot study comparing 432 Hz and 440 Hz found that music tuned to 432 Hz was associated with a greater reduction in heart rate and lower self-reported anxiety than the same music tuned to 440 Hz. Another study with emergency nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic found that listening to 432 Hz music may be a low-cost support for managing anxiety and stress. While more research is still needed, these early findings are part of why this field continues to be so compelling.

Tenille’s work does not claim that one frequency is a cure, or that 432 Hz is a replacement for medical or psychological care. Instead, it explores how carefully created sound environments may help the body move into a more regulated state. Through tone, resonance, breath, rhythm, silence and deep listening, the body is invited to soften out of stress and into presence.

The En Coda Music project extends this inquiry through live 432 Hz music experiences and ongoing research into how sound may influence the brain, heart rate, breath and emotional state. This exploration is also featured in the documentary Does Sound Heal, which follows the intersection of science, sound therapy, music and lived human experience.

At its heart, 432 Hz is not only about tuning an instrument. It is about tuning the listener back toward stillness, connection and the intelligence of the body.
